AI for programming: What is it, and what are the free tools?

An AI programming assistant is a tool that writes, completes, explains, and corrects code based on the instructions in the programming language of the content. You can ask it something in Spanish, and it will return it as code.

That’s not to say that it will do the programming for you. What it does is take the repetitive work off your hands, so you can spend your time figuring out what you want to solve and how. Several of the most popular tools have free versions, so here’s how they work and which ones you can try today.

What is an AI-powered programming assistant?

It’s a program that suggests or writes code based on a request in natural language. In English, it’s called a coding assistant. It can run within your code editor, in your browser, or in a chat window, and you can ask it things such as “Explain what this function does” or “Build a contact form in HTML”.

If you’ve ever used traditional autocomplete, the difference is significant. Before, it would suggest the name of a variable. Now it writes entire functions for when something isn’t something isn't working, translates your code from one language to another, or sets up tests to verify how it works.

How does it work?

They were trained on massive amounts of public code and learned to predict which lines come next. When you write a comment or a statement, the tool reads the file you have open (sometimes the entire project) and returns a suggestion. Then you decide: accept it, edit it, or discard it.

What can it do, and what can’t it do?

What it does well:

  • Complete lines and functions as you type.
  • Explain a code snippet you don’t understand in Spanish.
  • Find that bug that’s been stumping you for half an hour.
  • Set up the initial structure of a project so you don’t have to start from scratch.
  • Translate code from one programming language to another.

What it can’t do:

  • It doesn’t know what you’re trying to achieve. It sees the code, not your idea.
  • It makes things up. It might suggest functions or libraries that simply don’t exist—that’s called hallucination.
  • It carries over the errors and biases from the code it was trained on.
  • It doesn’t spare you from learning the logic. If you can’t read what it suggests, you won’t be able to fix it when it fails either.

What are the AI tools available for programming?

  1. Auto-complete within the editor. It suggests code as you type, without leaving the program you’re working in. This is where almost everyone starts.
  2. General-purpose chat rooms. These are for asking questions, figuring out an error, or asking for a step-by-step explanation of a concept. They aren’t integrated into the editor, but they’re the easiest to use at first.
  3. Code agents. You give them a complete task, and they modify multiple files on their own. They’re the most powerful—but also the ones most likely to cause problems if you don’t review what they’ve done.
  4. Idea-to-app platforms. You describe what you want, and they generate a first working version of a webpage or app.

Free AI programming tools:

Free plans are always subject to change. We checked this information in August of 2026, so before making a decision, it’s a good idea to check out each tool’s official website.

ToolWhat it doesWhat the free plan includesIdeal for
GitHub CopilotAutocompletes code inside the editor and replies through chat.2,000 autocompletions a month and a monthly AI credit quota for the chatThose who program using Visual Studio Code
Gemini Code AssistAutocompletion, chat, and code revisionUp to 180,000 autocompletions a month, according to Google. You only need a Gmail accountProgramming often without exceeding your quota
Cursorediting code with integrated AIHobby plan: autocompletion and limited agents. You can view your quota on your dashboardTrying an editor with AI agents before paying for one
WindsurfEditor with autocomplete and an agentLimited autocomplete on all plans. The agent had a restricted quotaWriting code daily without exceeding your quota
ReplitProgramming, trying out, and publishing from your browserStarter Plan: daily agent credits, limited monthly development time, and one published appYou can start without needing to install anything
ChatGPT, Gemini or ClaudeThey can explain errors, translate code, and teach conceptsFree plans have a message limitUnderstand the code that you already wrote
Bolt.newGenerate a new web app from just a descriptionDaily and monthly token limits, no card requiredQuickly creating a prototype for a new idea

Where to start? If it’s your first time, the easiest way is to use a browser: Replit or a chat like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude you don’t have to install anything, and you'll see something working the very same. The next step is to add autocomplete to the editor, using GitHub Copilot or Gemini Code AssistAnd if you’d like to see an idea turned into an app in a matter of ten minutes, Bolt.new is the place for that.

If you’re a student, there’s GitHub Student Developer Pack which gives you access to Copilot Student. According to GitHub’s documentation, it has no monthly limit on autocomplete suggestions.

What should you keep in mind before you start?

Age minimum and terms of use:

This is the most boring part, and the part that almost no one reads, but it’s worth doing. Every tool has its own rules, and they don’t all match up. ChatGPT can be used starting at age 13, and for users between 13 and 18, it requires permission from a parent or a responsible adult. Gemini also starts at age 13 (or the applicable age in your country) with a personal Google account. Claude requires users to be at least 18 years old. It’s worth reading the terms and conditions before creating an account, and if you’re a minor, discuss it with your parents.

Always reading and testing the code

Just because something pops up in two seconds doesn’t mean it works. An assistant might give you a solution that looks flawless at first glance but breaks the first time you encounter an unusual case. Reading it, testing it, and understanding why it works is a part of the job.

Guarding your data

Never copy-paste your passwords, access keys, or any of your personal data into these tools. Many free plans use your conversations to train their models. So the privacy policy is worth reading, even if it seems like a hassle.

Learn to program with AI with Chicas en Tecnología.

An AI assistant is much more effective when you understand what you’re reading. That’s why, in our free educational experiences, we teach both together: the basics of programming and how to use AI as a tool.

In the AI Assisted Programming Course participants learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript over the course of 8 weeks and work in teams to build a technology project with social impact. In the most recent session, almost 100 young women from across Argentina completed the course delivering 25 finished projects focused on health, education, work, and entertainment.

And at IA Campour four-week virtual camp for girls ages 13-23 across Latin America, the plan is to create with AI, design a bot with its own personality, break algorithm biases and prototype solutions for their own communities. You don’t need to know anything about technology— you just need to be curious.

Registration is open at different times throughout the year, and all programs are free. You can find them under Educational experiences. To make sure you don’t miss the next one, fill out this form and follow us on Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn— that’s where we’ll announce new registration periods first.

So why do we keep pushing this so hard? Because the starting point remains unequal. According to our investigation, Parity in Code, women make up only 36% of the workforce at the tech companies surveyed in Argentina. The AI that will shape much of the work in the coming years is being written right now. We care about who’s writing it.

Frequently asked questions about AI for programming

Can you program with AI without knowing how to code?

To a certain extent, yes. With “Idea-to-app” platforms, you can create a first version of a webpage or app without writing a single line of code. The problem arises later, when something goes wrong or you want to change a detail: that’s when you need to understand the logic and read the code.

What’s the best Free AI for programming?

It depends on what you’re using it for, but if we had to pick one to get started, right now it's Gemini Code Assist. Its free plan is much more comprehensive than GitHub Copilot’s, which is the other obvious option for autocomplete within the editor. If you just need an error explained to you, the free version of ChatGPT or Claude will do the trick. And if you want to build something and see it running today, try Replit.

Is AI going to replace programmers?

For now, what’s changed is the task, not the job itself. Fewer hours writing code line by line and more hours deciding what to build and reviewing what the tool suggests. Someone still has to realize that an answer is wrong, and AI still can’t do that part.

What programming language should you learn to work with AI?

For web development, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript— because you can see results in a browser from day one, and that’s what hooks you. Python is another common choice, especially if you’re into data or Artificial Intelligence.
