{"id":17412,"date":"2024-12-11T12:03:41","date_gmt":"2024-12-11T15:03:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chicasentecnologia.org\/?p=17412"},"modified":"2025-09-30T19:33:46","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T22:33:46","slug":"women-in-stem-the-data-calling-for-action-in-the-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chicasentecnologia.org\/en\/2024\/12\/11\/women-in-stem-the-data-calling-for-action-in-the-region\/","title":{"rendered":"Women in STEM: data calling for action in the region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultural advances in gender equality have been made in recent years; however, the world of technology still presents many challenges to overcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aiming to generate evidence to drive change, <\/span><b>Girls in Technology (CET)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> -supported by <\/span><b>NCR Foundation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- presented the report <\/span><b>\u201cThe gap that persists.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an analysis of the university statistics of <\/span><b>Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This study seeks to understand trends in enrollment, enrollment and graduation of women in technological careers at the regional level. In addition to providing a comparative analysis of the situation, the report includes a country-specific section that examines the particularities of each university system and national statistics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Methodologies to drive change<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to carry out this analysis, Chicas en Tecnolog\u00eda has developed its own census methodology, which incorporates specific categories focused on careers.<\/span><b> intensive in<\/b> <b>programming<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and of <\/span><b>technological development <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(electronic engineering, robotics, biotechnology and hardware design and development, among others). This approach made it possible to identify gender inequalities in the university system more clearly and to compare statistics between countries in the region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><b>Milagros Gim\u00e9nez<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, CET's Research Leader: <\/span><b>\u201cThis is not a single-country problem, but a structural challenge we face at the regional level.\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The data reveal<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report highlights that, although women represent more of the <\/span><b>50% of total university enrollment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the countries analyzed, their participation in technological disciplines remains low.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Regional map<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uruguay leads with a <\/span><b>42,6%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of participation of women in STEM careers, followed by Argentina and Colombia. Peru and Chile present the lowest rates, with <\/span><b>28,9% and 29%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, respectively.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>STEM Careers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female participation varies between <\/span><b>28.9% and 42.6%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In areas such as <\/span><b>natural sciences, mathematics and statistics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, exceeds the <\/span><b>50%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in several countries. However, in <\/span><b>information and communication technologies (ICT)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, does not exceed <\/span><b>23%.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Programming Intensives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">female participation is even lower, at between <\/span><b>11.1% and 22.6%.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Technological development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The participation rate ranges from <\/span><b>14% and 28,1%.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>A call to action<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinking about inclusive and diverse technology is not only a question of rights, but also a matter of <\/span><b>strategic opportunity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to foster innovation and generate solutions that benefit society as a whole. The incorporation of people from different contexts in the creation of technological solutions brings new perspectives, approaches and answers to global problems.
